Our
bodies are 60-70% water. Water is an essential
nutrient that is involved in every function
of the body. It helps transport nutrients
and waste products in and out of cells.
It is necessary for all digestive, absorptive,
circulatory and excretory functions, as
well as for the utilization of the water-soluble
vitamins. It is also needed for maintenance
of proper body temperature. Inadequate
water consumption impairs kidney function,
increases the level of toxins in the urinary
tract, increases the risk of gallstones
and kidney stones and impairs immune function.
Consuming plenty of water can slow the
aging process and can prevent or improve
arthritis, kidney stones, constipations,
arteriosclerosis, obesity, glaucoma, cataracts,
diabetes, hypoglycemia and many other
diseases. Water best meets our liquid
needs, however juices and milk can also
contribute. Alcoholic beverages and drinks
containing caffeine are not good substitutes
for water. In fact, these act as diuretics,
so you must drink twice as much water
to replace what you just lost (i.e. -
if you drink a 6 oz coffee, you need to
drink 12 oz. of water!).
By
drinking an adequate amount of clean,
fresh, filtered water each day - at least
8 - 8oz. glasses - you are ensured that
your body has all it needs to maintain
good health. Adults and children who play
sports require even more water!
